Critical Care Service for Surgery

Critical Care is an important component ofgraduate surgical education. The Critical Care Service for Surgery (CCSS) works within the Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) and participates in the management of all patients in that unit. The CCSS also participates in the management of surgical patients in other units as well as consults on selected medical critical care patients.

Dr. Anthony A. Meyer (Co-Program Director of Surgical Critical Care),Dr. Preston Rich,
Dr.Renae Stafford, Dr. Elizabeth Dreesen,
Dr. Harry Marshall, Dr. Anthony Charles and
Dr. Horacio Hojman actively participate in this section of General Surgery. Dr. Philip Boysen from the Department of Anesthesiology also provide faculty support. The CCSS is comprised of surgery, anesthesia, and emergency medicine residents with dedicated 24-hour coverage in the ICU. Residents are supervised by surgery and anesthesia attendings and critical care fellows who work with all admitting services in the management of their patients

The educational experience includes daily teaching rounds and lectures. These lectures cover a broad range of topics in critical care. Additionally, trainees participate in weekly ICU Grand Rounds and Journal Clubs. Clinical experience on the rotation includes ventilatory management, hemodynamic monitoring and co-management of all critically ill surgical patients admitted to the CCSS. Clinical research projects are pursued in the critical care units. General Surgery residents can take a critical care fellowship to qualify for the Certificate of Added Qualification in Surgical Critical Care.
