The
Division of Gastrointestinal Surgery
The Division of Gastrointestinal Surgery at UNC is composed of
Drs. Mark J. Koruda,
Timothy M. Farrell,
and D. Wayne Overby,
Timothy S. Sadiq,
and Hartwig Bunzendahl.
Drs. Koruda and Farrell are board certified by the American
Board of Surgery, members of the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary
Tract and fellows of the American College of Surgeons. The practice
specializes in gastrointestinal surgery, performing over 1200 operations
per year.
All aspects of patient care are coordinated by GI Surgery Nurse
Coordinators Amanda Kircher, RN, Ada Anderson, RN, and Karen Colton,
RN. Coordinating care is a crucial element and hallmark to the Gastrointestinal
patient.
The Division collaborates closely with the Division
of Digestive Diseases and Nutrition at UNC, and is associated
with UNC
Health Care, located in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The hospital
is a 680-bed tertiary care, teaching facility that serves the surrounding
southeastern states.
Dr. Koruda's
practice is centered on the surgical management of inflammatory
bowel disease (IBD). He performs approximately 150 operations per
year for Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, employing novel
techniques for the management of IBD-related strictures, fistulas
and perineal disease. Ileal pelvic pouches, continent ileostomies,
revisions of stomal complications, sphincter-preserving operations
for rectal cancer, rectal prolapse and anal incontinence, and surgical
management of enterocutaneous fistula and short bowel syndrome are
the mainstay of the practice. He serves as co-director of the Adult
Nutrition Support Service at UNC.
Dr. Farrell
is fellowship trained in Minimally Invasive Surgery, with a practice
focused on advanced laparoscopy for management of gastroesophageal
reflux disease, achalasia, morbid obesity and hiatal hernias. He
co-directs the Center for Esophageal Diseases and Swallowing and
the Center for Bariatric Surgery, as well the Laparoscopic Institute
of North Carolina Laparoscopic
(LINC@UNC), a teaching center for surgeons-in-training that maintains
a fellowship in advanced GI surgery and laparoscopy, a state-of-the-art
surgical skills laboratory, and a series of continuing education
courses
Dr. Overby's
practice focuses on minimally invasive foregut surgery, gastroesophageal
reflux disease, achalasia, hiatal hernias, morbid obesity, Barrett's
esophagus, and laparoscopic obesity surgery with the lap band. Dr.
Overby is certified by the American Board of Surgery and a member
of SAGES-The Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic
Surgeons. He completed his fellowship in Advanced GI Surgery and
Laparoscopy at UNC, Department of Surgery.
Dr. Sadiq's
practice focuses on colon and rectal cancer, laparoscopic colorectal
surgery, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, anorectal disease,
hereditary colorectal cancer, and rectal prolapse. Dr. Sadiq completed
his fellowship in Colon and Rectal Surgery at the Lahey Clinic in
Burlington, Massachusetts. He is board certified by the American
Board of Surgery and an Associate Fellow of the American College
of Surgeons. Dr. Sadiq is a member of the American Society of Colon
and Rectal Surgeons.
Dr. Bunzendahl
directs the UNC Hernia Center.
He specializes in the care of abdominal wall hernias in adults.
He received his Doctor of Medicine degree from University of Heidelberg,
Germany. He completed his training at the Medizinische Hochschule
Hannover, Germany. His areas of interest include General Surgery,
hepatobiliary surgery and organ transplantation.
Dr. Herbst came
to UNC in 1973 as the department's first surgeon dedicated to surgery
of the Gastrointestinal Tract. He retired from clinical practice
in 2001 and continues to participate in teaching students and residents.
His interests include GI Endocrinology, Bariatric Surgery, Inflammatory
Bowel Disease, and Laparoscopic Surgery.
