The
Division of Surgical Oncology
State-of-the-art cancer care requires the expertise of many specialists
including surgical oncology, medical oncology and radiation oncology
to name a few. This team approach to the cancer patient is commonly
referred to as multidisciplinary care. The Division of Surgical
Oncology and Endocrine Surgery is devoted to the concept of multidisciplinary
care. In addition, we take an active leadership role in the University
of North Carolina Multidisciplinary
Breast Cancer Program, the Multidisciplinary
Melanoma Program and the Multidisciplinary
Gastrointestinal Oncology Program.
The Division of Surgical Oncology is the surgical arm of the nationally
recognized Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center. We currently
have five faculty attending surgical oncologists who have all completed
a Society of Surgical
Oncology- approved surgical oncology fellowship. We also have
four board certified nurse practitioners who provide excellent clinical
care and are a valuable patient education resource.
The mission of the Division of Surgical Oncology is to provide
state-of-the-art cancer care and to improve cancer care, both locally
and nationally, through laboratory research and translation of these
results into clinical care. To do this, we are dedicated to both
basic science and clinical research. The Division of Surgical Oncology
is actively involved in basic science research in collaboration
with the Lineberger
Comprehensive Cancer Center. We are also involved in a number
of clinical trials, both locally and in conjunction with national
cooperative groups. The Division of Surgical Oncology is also committed
to providing education and research opportunities for the next generation
of health care providers. We work with medical students, surgical
residents, doctoral and post-doctoral students to provide research
opportunities with the goal of establishing a foundation for future
contributions to the field of medicine.
